For September 2018 we wanted to help you with planting your fall garden. The brand spotlight for the month is the HOSS cover crops. Cover crops are an integral part of any vegetable garden rotation, providing restorative properties to rebuild soils for the next round of vegetable crops. This month we have included four different cool-season cover crop seeds from our friends at Hoss Tools.
Cool-season cover crops should be planted in fall with enough time to establish before harsh winter conditions arrive. Although many of these will “winter kill” or become dormant in winter, they will provide great ground cover and nutrient retention throughout the cooler months.
Cover crops have numerous benefits that are going to improve the overall health of your garden soil. Depending on the specific cover crop, these benefits could include nitrogen addition, weed suppression, erosion control, soil building and disease/nematode suppression.
In a vegetable garden situation, cover crops should be mowed/cut before going to seed to prevent any recurring weed issues. Another great option is to use the cover crop as forage for livestock such as chickens or goats.
